Kay's Story

Dear Frankie, I am not a good writer, but after delaying this for so long here goes..

Start of 2018 I had resolutions but none that said ‘I will run 42.2 km and finish a marathon by the end of the year’ - and that’s what happened when I look back at 2018, the most significant thing that happened in my life and that is thanks to you.

When I signed up, I had no idea what the journey would entail. By then I was just recovering form wrist surgery and was in a couch/bed to work and back everyday lifestyle which was not helping my mental state, which brings me further down from the stresses I was dealing with.

Having a bigger goal to complete and joining a group with a training plan looked like something that would help me get out of this, and your encouraging and kind words were a bonus in this journey. Apart of from all the personal reasons, the fact that we (#mindovermarathonsg) were also raising money for Samaritans Of Singapore was also a reason to keep going as depression and the struggles are not things that I consider lightly and know even the smallest mental struggles sometimes required a person to help with.

From the first run itself, I started to feel better, running outside and breathing fresh air, correct foot work and realising running a marathon is not only running but also a lot of strengthening work, didn’t scare me as you were always saying ‘we can do this girls!’. Your ‘one day one run at a time’ approach is something I appreciate in life as well that resonated perfectly. I didn’t want to panic about the end date and took every struggle that came my way one at a time.

During the training I failed to follow the plan and you made me realise that it’s a state of mind and I must make myself believe and make time for the training. I appreciated the support you had given me when I got the knee pain with T-3 weeks to go and with many doubts and discouraging advises that was surrounding me, I still wanted to take it day by day with end goal still in mind. Thank you for supporting my decision to continue and encouraging me before the run and also during the run whenever we met. During the 42.2kms run, which was often painful and tiring, your voice kept popping up saying ‘one step after the other - you can smash it!!!!’ and got me one step closure to the finish line.

From the day I signed up to the day I’m writing this, this journey has changed my lifestyle and who I am. I have changed my food habits where now I take healthy breakfast every day. I am no longer asleep to work and back zombie, I feel more energetic every day. I am more aware of the body and how important core strength and strengthening the muscles is and will continue to be aware and try to strengthen for a better posture and better movements.

I am grateful that I met wonderful human beings, forged new friendships and continue to strengthen ourselves together. I love and am proud to be a part of Pretty Strong Squad!! And you are a kind and brave hearted lovely spirit, you have discipline in day to day life that I appreciate the most and try to instill at least a tiny bit in to mine. More importantly I am a mentally stronger person, enduring the 42.2Km run for 6 hours and 57 mins was painstakingly difficult but also the journey from June to December was not without its struggles. This journey has made me a better person, stronger and healthier woman who believes that she can take up anything if she has the mind to do it and that is thanks to you!!

Much love, Kay
