Boost Your Endurance with Chia Fresca: The Tarahumara Tribe's Secret Energy Drink

If you’ve read the book Born To Run, then you’ll know all about The Tarahumara tribe.

If you’re yet to read Christopher McDougall’s book then I’ll explain.. The Tarahumara is a Mexican tribe known as ‘The Running People’. They run anywhere from 50 to 100 miles at a time just for the fun of it.

One of the staples for The Tarahumara is Chia Fresca (Iskiate) - a seemingly endurance-enhancing, hydrating natural energy drink.

Ingredients

  • About 500ml of water

  • 1-2 tbsp dry chia seeds

  • Some lemon or lime juice (to taste)

  • Honey or agave nectar, to taste (optional)

Method

Stir the chia seeds into the water; let them sit for about five minutes. Stir again, and let sit for as long as you like. The more it sits, the more gel-like the seeds and water become. Add citrus juice and sweetener to taste.

There have been multiple studies that have found consuming chia seeds regularly show a decrease in blood pressure, inflammation, and blood sugar regulation. They’re a great source of Omega-3 and a powerhouse packed with protein and calcium.

Definitely not a bad addition to the diet!
