Join Us on a Journey of Transformation: Mind Over Marathon

In April 2018, I launched Mind Over Marathon in Singapore. As a holistic running coach, I saw the need for a supportive community where we could tackle mental health challenges together. What started as a simple idea turned into a movement, bringing together over 100 people united by a common goal: to improve their mental health through running.

Why I Started Mind Over Marathon:

  • Support and Community: To create a safe space for those struggling with mental health issues.

  • Raising Awareness: To promote mental health awareness and raise funds for related charities.

  • Personal Growth: To help individuals find strength and resilience through running and training together.

Over seven months of training, from initial walks to conquering a marathon, we built not just physical endurance but also unbreakable bonds and unwavering support for one another. Our journey highlights the incredible impact of exercise on mental well-being and the power of community.

A NOTE

FROM OUR COACH FRANKIE

Reflecting on Pretty Strong’s journey since we started as a non-profit in 2016, I am filled with immense gratitude for the community we’ve built together. The mission began with a focus on raising awareness of mental health after struggling for years with severe depression, panic attacks, and chronic pain.

During this time, I ran the London Marathon and raised £1,776 for Mind Charity. Moving to Singapore, I then became a personal trainer and running coach, launching the Mind Over Marathon initiative – a 7-month couch-to-marathon program that coached non-runners struggling with poor mental health to achieve the seemingly impossible: running a marathon, completely for free for 7 months. Partnering with Joe & The Juice and Lorna Jane, we raised S$3,635 for Samaritans of Singapore.

In 2020, my journey took a challenging turn when I was hit by a car. This, coupled with the global pandemic, being away from family, and losing my physical activity outlet during my recovery, caused a significant decline in my mental health. However, looking to the future, we are more determined than ever to see how much impact we can make in Singapore and beyond.

Thank you to our community, our clients, our partners. With your support, we have been able to create positive changes and foster a culture of self-acceptance and mental health advocacy. Together, we have raised funds and awareness, giving people access to the help they need.

Our journey has only just begun. We led efforts to spark dialogue about mental health in fitness and beyond, aiming to view mental illness from a place of understanding and acceptance. As a result, we’re slowly breaking down the stigma associated with it.

Now more than ever, it’s crucial to continue talking about mental health and take action. Whether through donations, sharing mental health resources, or checking in on a loved one, every act of kindness counts. We truly believe in a future where everyone will have the support they need to take care of their mental health, and we can’t wait to achieve that together.

We’re just getting started.
